PORTRAITS OF POPULAR RELIGIOSITY

There are many and varied expressions of popular religiosity in the Philippines and in other countries.

Domenico SARTORE classified these expressions under four categories: (a) devotions to Christ, the Blessed Mother, and the saints; (b) rites related to the liturgical year; (c) traditional practices associated with the celebration of the sacrament and other Christian rites; and (d) institutions and religious objects associated with various forms of popular religiosity. [Sartore, 233]

Anscar CHUPUNGCO, OSB, grouped them under the following categories: (a) popular devotions, (b) processions, (c) altars and shrines, and (d) religious drama and dances. [Chupungco, Liturgical Inculturation, 103]

This page – Portraits of Popular Religiosity – gathers and documents the different expressions of popular religiosity found in the Philippines and in other countries, and presents them here under the categories offered to us by the late Anscar Chupungco OSB.
